Welcome to the A-Z of Turning Dutch. What’s that? I hear you cry. Simply put: what springs to mind about life in the Netherlands when you think of the letter A? What aspect of life in the land of the Dutch do you associate with the letter B? And C? You get the picture. And this post, what with it being the fourth in the series, is all about the Dutch associations you have with the letter D.

The A-Z of Turning Dutch – The Letter D

Firstly, I apologise for the long time gap between C and D. You can blame long covid, or as it is now known in the Netherlands, Post Covid Syndroom. Referring to it by a different name has not made the Dutch Health Minister any more active to help those suffering with long covid. But I digress.

Let’s get to it. You, the tweeters, associate the following D words with the Dutch and the Netherlands:

  • Drop (zoet is the only correct answer I will accept here to the question, zout of zoet?)
  • Den Haag
  • Dierenhospitaal & Dierenambulance Den Haag (who, the tweeter says, do wonderful work in animal care & rescue & where we have adopted our cats from)
  • Dijken. As one reader pointed out: Without them this country would be a lot more wet. Which I don’t think any of us can argue with
  • De of het? The age old question that gets foreigners banging their heads against de muur. Or is it het muur?
  • Dammen
  • Delftsblauw
  • Dichte Mist: the D that strikes fear into every commuter’s heart
  • Dierenambulance
  • Droste-effect
  • Duitsers? “Having lived here for 34 years, I’m always intrigued by the relationship between the people of the Netherlands and Germany,” says one reader
  • Doorduwen
  • Donderdag (3 Ds – what’s not to love about it?)
